World Bank Approves 1 Billion Euros to Finance Rail Network Electrification

MRUD News – World Bank has approved 1 billion Euros to finance a project to electrify approximately 500 kilometers of Iran’s rail network.

Yusef Geran-Pasha, Director General of the Northern Region’s Railroads Company has announced this, adding that this project is going to be implemented as part of the contract between Iran and Russia (concluded in 2015) and would take three years to be completed.

The project pertains to the electrification of the railway route that connects Garmsar in the Semnan Province with Gorgan in the Golestan Province, with the approximate length of 500 kilometers.

IRNA has also quoted Geran-Pasha as saying that “electrifying the railway will considerably reduce the air and sound pollutions, fuel consumption, and will also reduce the chance of fatal accidents; a large part of the railroad perforce passes through the residential areas.”
