PMO Not Affected by Maersk’s Decision

PMO Not Affected by Maersk’s Decision

MRUD News—the Deputy of Ports Economic Affairs at Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) has stated that Maersk Line’s announcement about ceasing operations in Iran will not affect the country’s ports.

According to Mohammad Ali Hassanzadeh, based on PMO’s annual performance reports, Maersk’s cargo transport in Iranian ports in the post-JCPOA era amounts to 55,000 TEUs (for 2017-2018), making up for 2.5% of the total volume of cargo discharging and loading in Shahid Rajaii Port (i.e. 2.65 million TEUs).

For the time being, 305 shipping companies, including liners, feeders, box operators, and SOCs carry out cargo operations to/from Shahid Rajaii Port.

Maersk’s activities in Shahid Rajaii Port have been minimal and prominently as box operators; therefore, the recent developments with regards to US withdrawing from the nuclear deal and consequently Maersk announcing it is going to cut its operations with Iran’s ports is not going to affect PMO, Hassanzadeh stated.
