MRUD NEWS—Following formal invitation of Iraq Minister of Transport, Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Mohammad Eslami, travelled to Baghdad on 6 March 2021 to met with his Iraqi counterpart Nasser Hussein al-Shibli.
The travel is intended to develop and strengthen transport cooperation between Iran and Iraq and to facilitate regional transit affairs.
Finalizing bilateral agreements for implementing Shalamcheh-Basra railroad project to form a rail link between Iran and Iraq is a top agenda.
Iraq Minister of Transport emphasized on the necessity of improving the quality of road, marine, air, and rail transport and expressed Iraq's preparedness to work on transit systems with Iran as per administrative guidelines for transit cooperation with neighboring countries including Turkey, Syria, Jordan, and Iran.
Al-Shibli informed of plans to hold meetings to resolve remaining issues for finalizing bilateral agreements.
Eslami also described transport as "vital artery of trade" and informed of Iran's preparation for supporting bilateral cooperation and strengthening relations in order to increase quality of transport.
