MRUD NEWS—As per an agreement between Iran and Azerbaijan during 14th meeting of Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Committee on 25 January 2021 at Iran Ministry of Finance, the process of freight trans-ship at Azerbaijan Border will be eliminated from 25 January onward. This has provided direct shipment to the final destination in the territory of that country.
According to Javad Hedayati, director general of International Transit and Transport Bureau at Iran Road Maintenance & Transportation Organization, during the outbreak of covid-19 pandemic, international fleet of Islamic Republic of Iran needed transshipment for freight transit that imposed burdens for exports and road transit.
With determination of both neighboring countries for bilateral cooperation, this impediment has been eliminated through mutual negotiations in road transport.
According to Iran Road Maintenance & Transportation Organization's statistics, 25000 trucks carrying export freights has transited from Iran to Azerbaijan during last year and it is expected to increase with elimination of transshipment process.
Noteworthy transshipment is when cargo or a container is moved from one vessel to another while in transit to its final destination.
