Afghanistan Transit Freight to India Through Chabahar

MRUD NEWS—Afghanistan transited 30 refrigerated containers and 9 containers to India through Chabahar Port on 1 July 2020.

According to the head of Sistan and Baluchistan Port and Maritime Organization, Behrooz Aghaie, this is the first time a transit freight is being shipped from Shahid Beheshti Ports of Chabahar as per the trilateral agreement of Iran-Afghanistan-India.

The freight’s total weigh is 76 TEU that is heading to Mundra and Nhava Sheva Ports in India.

Chabahar Transit Agreement, as an important transport regional agreement, was signed between Iran-India-Afghanistan on September 12, 2016. According to this multimodal transport agreement, India can transit its commercial freights through Chabahar Port, Milak, Mahirood and Dogharoon borders that enhance trade and geographic development.

The first phase of the port was inaugurated by Rouhani in December 2017, a little over a month after the first consignment of wheat from India to Afghanistan was sent via this facility.

Previously India and Iran signed agreements at the presence of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday, 17 Feb. 2018. As a major deal, MoU was signed between the two sides for the Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar between Iran's Port and Maritime Organization and India Ports Global Limited.In this framework, Iran will be leasing a part of the area of the multipurpose and container terminal for 18 months for the Indian side to take over operations of port facilities in the first phase of the port development project.

India has committed $85 million for the development of the Shahid Beheshti Port.
